But the publishers insisted he would have to write a preface explaining the article, and this is when he included his conclusion: "I hold that the great mass of men lead lives of misery because they are accustomed to see no good in themselves and to attribute all the misery and insecurity of life to external and accidental causes, to the misfortunes of circumstance."
In the second edition he stated: "I offer this, not as a new theory, but as an attempt to formulate one which I hope will gradually become a generally recognised truth."
The book was reprinted in hardback by Penguin Books in 1963 with a new introduction by him.

Nicholas Melcher (born January 24, 1977) is an American composer, producer, and artist from Atlanta, Georgia, United States. He is best known for his work with the R&B group Brandy & Monica.
Melcher was born on January 24, 1977 in Jackson, Mississippi. He began playing the piano when he was four years old, later attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He composed his first song when he was 12 years old.
He released his first studio album, A Million to One, in 2004, which was recorded in Atlanta and mixed at South Beach Studios. The album, produced by Melcher and Danja, was distributed via his own independent record label, To Love Earth. The album went on to receive a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In 2007, he produced Brandy's album Don't Let Go, which went on to sell over one million copies and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.
Melcher has performed with Brandy and Monica at various locations, including the Grammy Awards, Essence Awards, NAACP Image Awards, BET Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards.
